Obituary

Joyce Elaine Powell

On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, Joyce Elaine Powell, 87, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away at UTMC after a brief illness. Joyce was born on August 17, 1932 in Marion, Indiana to Barbour and Ethel (Hopkins) Saunders. Joyce was a graduate of the Indiana University School of Business, and served nearly 40 years as Purchasing Manager for Container Graphics Corporation, Toledo. Joyce was a sister of the Sigma Kappa Sorority, Past-President of Parents Helping Parents - Toledo, and a member of the Toledo Zion United Methodist Church.

Joyce loved family, church, music, art, flowers, designing, and animals. She was known for her quick wit, her strength, and her compassion for people and animals. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Phillip Saunders, sister, Joan Frye, and niece Pamela Frye. She leaves to cherish her memory sons, Brian Powell, George (Linda) Powell, daughter, Ann (Rick) Heintzelman, grandsons Dustin, Stuart (Brandi Brinson), and Nicholas Powell, as well as her much-loved nieces and nephews.

Due to cautions regarding the pandemic, there will be a private service at the IOOF Cemetery in Marion, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials sent to Toledo Zion United Methodist Church. Arrangements made by the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home. Please view and sign Joyce’s condolence page at Berstickerscottfuneralhome.com.

A story that describes my relationship with my mom. My mom was good at solving problems. I think I am good at spotting problems. She had answers to problems even if you did not ask. In grade school we had a reading program were we ordered paperback books. When they arrived,we were given time to show each other our choices. Some children did not get books, and just sat there while we had fun. When I told my mom this, she asked if any one in my class would not get books? I told her that Daren would not. She told me to let him pick 3 of my 6 books. When I told Daren, he asked why? I told him"my mom made me". Since he had a mom; he understood. When the books arrived, Daren was proud to show off his books. The teacher asked him how he got the books. He told her of the arrangement. The teacher said it was really nice of me. Still not happy with the deal, I told her "my mom made me do it" Even now, when I help a neighbor, a cat, a dog, or just do the right thing I have to say "my mom made me do it".

George, my deepest sympathy to you and your family. It broke my heart to see her obituary in the paper. I liked and respected your mom a lot!!! She was always kind to me. I loved talking with her and she always left me with a smile on my face (or a good ole belly laugh). I know you were very close to your mom. I’m so sorry for your loss. I will miss her.
